Rant: Rulings: You keep using that word...

One of the big hullabaloos of the OSR is "Rulings not Rules"

So, I think people use this to promote their mediocre houserules of games too much.

So if you play White Box but put in multiple die types and 15 more classes, 9 races (and modify the ones that are in there in the first place), you functionally aren't playing White Box anymore.  The retort of "Rulings not rules" is invalid because that's not what the fucking term is meant for.

Rulings are intended for situations the rules DON'T cover (or you can't be arsed to look up).  Essentially that is intended to be the design playground for the GM.  You don't rewrite rules that are there and think this is still the same game.  It isn't.  Go write your own.

I've talked a bit about this a few times in the past and hopefully this will be my last discussion on the matter but houserules are supposed to be a necessary EVIL if necessary at all.  They shouldn't be something someone WANTS to include.  They should be something that are forced to be included due to a lack of proper design.  I'm sick and tired of being invited to a game and getting handed a fucking novella of houserules.  How about we just play the fucking game and see if any of this shit is necessary?

Because 99% of the time it isn't.
