(P)Review: WFRP: The Old World

Cubicle 7 sucks.  They make lame corporate pseudo-RPG product slop exactly like Free League and Modiphius, they're just better at hiding it.  Apparently the simulacrum WFRP4E isn't selling great, so they decided they should double up on it's corebook audience by producing another game in the exact same vein.  Their chief goal being "accessibility".  This is a problem they themselves created by stapling shit on to the greatest version of WFRP, WFRP2E, that didn't need to be stapled on and making the system untenable due to the strain of all the extra crap they added that was completely unnecessary.  Probably in the name of "mechanical engagement" or some shit.  The people who caused a problem believing it was a feature shouldn't be allowed to fix that problem once it's determined to be a bug.  They are not fit to.  They should be fired for initially determing a bug was a feature.

I learned exactly one thing about WFRP: TOW - it uses dice pools.  Dice pools are and have always been a silly non-system for idiots.  Long story short, this is an expected element that Cubicle 7 has baked in because they want more idiots playing their game and therefore paying them money.  100% commercial decision, not an artistic decision.

This sort of thing should be called out when it happens - C7 is big enough to essentially back two horses in the WFRP space and see which one wins.  Likely it will be the new slop, which is good because at least they can stop pretending WFRP4 is good or somehow faithful to WFRP1 and WFRP2 before it.

I'm looking forward to either or both of these games crashing and burning.  It will definitely be at least one.  At best, both.
